 What is Muharram? Muharram is the first month of the Islamic New Year and is marked by a 10 day period of mourning for the grandson of the Prophet Muhammed (A.S. - Peace be upon him), Husayn ibn Ali (A.S.) who was massacred along with his family on the plains of Kerbala, Iraq. It was on the 10th of this month, known as the night of Ashura, 61 A.H. (680 A.D.) that Imam Husain (A.S..), the choicest scion of the family of Prophet Muhammad (A.S.) became a martyr under the most calamitous conditions ever chronicled in the annals of the civilized world. The atrocious acts were carried by a nefarious ruler, Yazid, son of Muawiyah.
What is Ashura? The Day of Ashura, (10th day of Muharram), an Islamic holiday, is well-known because of mourning for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S.), son of Ali (A.S.)
What is Islam? Islam is a religion, which guides its followers in every aspect of their lives. It is a way of life. Islam is the modern or latest version of the message sent by God through Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus. Islam was sent to mankind through Prophet Muhammad. Islam is "modern" in the sense that it has come to complement the teachings, which were introduced through Moses and Jesus. Islam is a religion, which seeks to give a meaningful purpose to our life on this earth.
